This mask comes from Bali in Indonesia. As for most of the masks that originate in Indonesia, this mask is also used in theatrical productions. The wearer of the mask symbolizes the character he is portraying. Balinese masks are a very important aspect of the theatrical and ritualistic performances. The mask is given life by the wearer who in turns is enlightened by the power of the mask. This particular mask represents the face of a monkey, a much respected animal in the Indonesian culture. The performer wearing a monkey mask display acrobatic mime and comedy skills, just like a monkey would.

This mask is not a replica of the mask used in Bali dance or theatre but it is an original interpretation of the Balinese carver of the original mask used ,and is sold in tourists market.
